Art residency in Ukrainian People's House

3 - 30 April 2023
Przemysl, Poland

The object of artistic consideration is the People's House in Przemyśl. We see it as a starting point for creative activity in various artistic fields.
The People's House in Przemyśl is a four-story historic building built in 1904 by the then local Ukrainian community. Nationalized after the end of World War II due to the deportation and emigration of Ukrainians, it has been slowly regaining its Ukrainian character since the late 1950s. Abandoned for years, it has been in the process of restoration since 2011, until today, when it is undergoing very dynamic changes under the influence of recent socio-political events. This is happening both in the material space (parallel reconstruction of three of the four floors) and in the space of social benefit (a place of refuge and a meeting place for "new" and "old" residents of Przemyśl, people of different nationalities, cultures and languages).
We encourage you to consider the People's House at 5 Kosciuszko Street in Przemyśl as a starting point for creative work in specific areas:
- a historic building in the city center (architecture, beauty, specific spaces, polychromy, etc...)
- the historical aspect - location on the map of Przemyśl, interpretation of the building as a place of meeting of cultures, Ukrainian presence in Przemyśl, coexistence, but also sometimes complicated relations
- the aspect of change - a building in the process of renewal, transformation, modernization, removal of the old, but also restoration of the original, removal of layers
- People's house in the context of refugees as a shelter
- The People's House as a metaphor for home - nostalgia for the home, a substitute for what has been lost, what is missed
- the building is perceived literally as a background for one's own activities, using specific places for work, photography, cinema, literature, poetry, music, performance
- The People's House as a community of people who share a common experience of this place, situation, commitment and dedication to one cause
